Jan-Pieter Barbian provides an extensive explor- ation of what he terms the ‘media dictatorship’ under National Socialism. Particular attention is given to the restrictions imposed on publishing houses, and the efforts made to control writers and to regulate the dissemination of literature in Nazi Germany. Barbian examines a culture in which an author’s failure to adhere to nationalist ideals or to self-censor their work resulted in exclusion from the literary market, and in some cases, persecution. In this thorough analysis of the media dictatorship, Barbian further considers how book burnings and other extreme measures paved the way for a restrictive, nationalist, conservative literary market, facilitating the spread of National Socialist propaganda. Yet he also details how, in spite of these conditions, loopholes were exploited by some writers and booksellers to evade Nazi regulations, thus highlighting acts of dissidence and failures in policies of control.
