One significant example of Jewish journalism was the Oesterreichisches Central-Organ, published in Vienna during the months of the 1848 revolution. The Central-Organ stood at the crossroads of sev- eral themes in modern Jewish history: the growth of the Jewish press, the 1848 rev- olution in Austria, Jewish emancipation, and the migratory movement from Europe to America. This essay aims to describe positions and to analyse ideas published in the periodical regarding those themes. Attention will be paid to the group of main collaborators of the Central-Organ and to the “Auf nach Amerika! ” (On to America!) movement proclaimed on the pages of the journal. Seen from a Jewish (and admittedly particular) point of view, the main issue of the 1848 revolutions was the legal and political emancipation of Central-European Jewry.
