TY - JOUR AU1 - Kelley, William H. AB - A STUDY OF THE CELL AND COLONY VARIATIONS OF BLASTOl\1YCES DERl\lATITIDIS WILLIAM H. KELLEY From the Department of Medicine, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, North Carolina Fungi like bacteria show striking variations of their cell and colony forms under different growth conditions. In 1932 Emmons' reviewed the accumu lated literature on cell pleomorphism and colony variation in the fungi in his report of new colony forms of Achorion and Trichophyton. More recently Fabian and Mcf.ullough" have shown that the yeasts undergo true dissocia tion into phases analogous to those of bacterial mutation. Whether or not other fungi exhibit a similar uniformity of cell and colony variation has not as yet been ascertained. This paper is the report of a study of the cell and colony variations of Blastomyces dermatitidis and a description of a new colony form of that organism. The observations were made on a stock strain of the fungus origi nally isolated from a case of blastomycosis. The cultures were grown at 37.5 C. upon beef extract agar in the preparation of which the constituents and the hydrogen ion concentrations were varied as will be described. All cultures were incubated in a humidor to prevent fluid TI - A Study of the Cell and Colony Variations of Blastomyces Dermatitidis JF - The Journal of Infectious Diseases DO - 10.1093/infdis/64.3.293 DA - 1939-05-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/oxford-university-press/a-study-of-the-cell-and-colony-variations-of-blastomyces-dermatitidis-slvCIM4RF0 SP - 293 EP - 296 VL - 64 IS - 3 DP - DeepDyve ER -
