TY - JOUR AU - Liu, Bailing AB - The free radical polymerization of styrene in water in the presence of β‐cyclodextrin (β‐CD) without using surfactants is described. The effect of β‐CD which greatly accelerated the polymerization, was wholly contributed to the formation of host–guest complexes with hydrophobic monomer to increase the monomer solubility in water. Through adding toluene that is similar in structure to monomer styrene to block the formation of β‐CD with styrene monomer, we found that just like free glucose, the glucose units of β‐CD could also accelerate the polymerization. The polymer particles with narrow particle‐size distribution and clear surface were prepared without using any surfactants and solvent mixtures.
