TY - JOUR AU - Kane, Jasmine E. AB - OBSERVATIONS ON THE MOULTING AND FEEDING OF A HYPERIID AMPHIPOD BY JASMINE E. KANE National Institute of Oceanography, Wormley, Godalming, Surrey, Great Britain Specimens of the hyperiid amphipod Parathemisto gracilipe.r Norman taken on recent cruises of the R.R.S. "Discovery II" and R.V. "Sarsia" were kept alive in constant temperature tanks (Baker, 1963) and some interesting observations made on their moulting and feeding behaviour. The specimens were taken at "Discovery II" station 4963, position 47°08.5'N 1 1 ° 1 3'W in a 70 cm net towed horizontally at the surface on 2 July 1962, and at "Sarsia" stations positions 47°28'N 06° 39'W and 47°lo'N 06°5 5'W in a TYF (trawl young fish) hauled vertically from 350 to 0 m at each station on 30 November 1962. While in the tanks many amphipods moulted, and the shed exoskeletons would appear at the bottom of the tanks or floating on the surface. Only a few amphipods were observed actually moulting and one of these, a female animal which was found moulting fourteen days after capture, was closely watched. It lay on its side with the cast skin free of its body except in the region of the mouthparts (fig. 1), where TI - Observations On the Moulting and Feeding of a Hyperiid Amphipod JF - Crustaceana DO - 10.1163/156854063X00516 DA - 1963-01-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/brill/observations-on-the-moulting-and-feeding-of-a-hyperiid-amphipod-rFEedXUNvR SP - 129 EP - 132 VL - 6 IS - 2 DP - DeepDyve ER -
