Semchishin Hydrogen permeability of materials is determined by measuring the quantity of hydrogen passing in a unit time through a unit surface area of a specimen under specified experimental conditions, i.e., by mea- suring gas flows at very slow rates and low pressures. Methods used in this application can be divided into two groups: 1) collecting the gas in a vessel of a known volume and measuring its pressure at periodic intervals; 2) continuous measurements of the gas flow with the aid of hydrodynamic affects (deflection of a mechanical screen, pressure drop across a throttle) or other physical factors (velocity of propagation of ultrasonics, time taken by ionized particles to pass through etc.). The method of measuring hydrogen flow should be absolute and sufficiently accurate; it should be suitable for carrying out measurements (continuously or at sufficiently frequent intervals) in a wide range of gas flow rates with simple and reliable equipment. These requirements are better satis- fied by the method which involves the collection of hydrogen.
