TY - JOUR AU1 - Lescovich, Joseph E. AB - This article discusses the prevention and dissipation of surges using automatic control valves. The automatic surge‐relief valve is a pilot‐controlled throttling valve whose opening and closing controls are individually adjustable. The article provides a brief review of surge theory, the “critical period”, the pump check valve, the electric check valve, the solenoid pilot valve, the recirculation valve, the swing check valve, the surge pressure relief valve, the pilot‐operated surge relief valve, the surge anticipator valve, the surge sensor, sizing the surge relief valve, gravity flow, and the uphill pumping system.
