Narayan Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi Introduction A great deal of fiction, some outstanding poetry, and the collected plays of three playwrights appeared in 2005. Themes and concerns ranged from the personal to the socio-political. A number of literary works in all three genres engaged in interrogating the past and exploring the regional diversity of Indian culture. Some outstanding books for children were published. Zai Whitaker, author of the novel Up the Ghat (1992), has also written books for children. Cobra in My Kitchen contains articles, stories and a few poems; The Boastful Centipede and Other Creatures in Verse is a delightful book of short poems about various small creatures like the skink (a type of lizard sometimes confused with a snake), turtles, centipedes, beetles, crabs and even the cockroach, which can be read by children as well as adults. We get a new insight into the lives of these creatures; as the author wittily puts it, ‘Okay, they’re small and they don’t roar and growl, but so what?
