The suitability of packaging materials in microwave oven conditions was studied on several plastics, plastic-coated paperboards and corrugated boards. The behaviour of aluminium trays and glass jars was also examined for comparison. THE SUITABILITY OF PACKAGING MATERIALS FOR FOOD CONTACT DURING HEATING I N MICROWAVE OVENS The purpose of the study was to measure the properties affecting the suitability of plastic based packaging materials for foodstuffs, and to find out how migration, physical and sensory properties of the packaging materials depend on each other. The migration tests were carried out under internationally proposed conditions, using methods that have become established in Europe. The physical tests on plastics-in particular the DSC analysis and the laboratory’s own simple heating test as well as the DMTA analysis-facilitated the selection of the test conditions and the evaluation of the packaging materials’ suitability for certain conditions.
