TY - JOUR AU1 - Eloussaief, Mabrouk AU2 - Hadjltaief, Haithem AU3 - Dammak, Nessrine AU4 - Benzina, Mourad AB - In the present study, green algae collected from Sidi Mansour-Sfax littoral were used to prepare activated carbon in order to remove methylene blue and orange of methyl dyes from textile wastewaters (Sahel-Tunisia). The activated carbon was prepared by the following conditions: 1/4 (w/w) a H3PO4/green algae ratio and 350 °C carbonization temperature. Green algae activated carbon (GAAC) was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and specific surface. Results of prepared material show a large specific surface area (785m2/g) and high textural porosity 71%. Adsorption process was studied using batch system. Equilibrium isotherms have been determined according to Langmuir and Freundlich models. At 298 K, the optimum retention capacities obtained from Langmuir equation reached to 68.96 mg/g for methyl orange at pH 4 and 147.05 mg/g for methylene blue at pH 8. Thermodynamic results indicated that dye adsorption is an exothermic and spontaneous process. From the obtained data, the GAAC was considered as performance activated carbon produced to eliminate textile dyes. Accordingly, local marine vegetable wastes can serve as precursors for activated carbon that can be used for other environmental applications.
