Reviewer: Asebe Regassa Debelo, University of Zurich, Switzerland ebates on conservation entangle competing epistemological, political, economic and policy perspectives ranging from the colonially rooted “fortress” conservation to D “community-based conservation” and now neoliberal conservation models. Paradoxically, all these models failed to achieve conservation goals although discourses and practices of conservation have historically been crucial in enhancing state power consolidation and territorial control (Neumann 1998). In accounting for the failure of such conservation models, social scientists take different theoretical positions making the debates further complex and daunting. The book, Failing Forward: The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Conservation by Robert Fletcher specifically focuses on the failure of neoliberal conservation models in achieving economic returns and conservation goals it aims, and paradoxically enhancing state regulation that it intends to make obsolete. The introductory section of the book, Capitalism on Trial, begins by offering a conceptual explanation of neoliberal conservation as a market-based nature commodification TI - Review of “Failing Forward: The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Conservation” JO - Social Forces DO - 10.1093/sf/soae016 DA - 2024-02-26 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/oxford-university-press/review-of-failing-forward-the-rise-and-fall-of-neoliberal-conservation-pRFYvNPAXM SP - e21 EP - e21 VL - 102 IS - 4 DP - DeepDyve ER -
