ISBN 0 471 94926 4 The back cover of this book states that “this book fills a significant gap in the climatological literature, providing a comprehensive assessment of the climates of the southern hemisphere”. I don’t believe that there is any disputing this description. Within this relatively compact and readable volume lies a very useful account of the past and present climates of the southern continents. There are nine chapters, written by a total of seven contributors (including the three editors). Following a general overview of the Southern Hemisphere (Chapter l), accounts of the present climates of southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand, South America and the Antarctic region (Chapters 2 to 5 inclusive) are presented. Past climates of southern Africa, Australasia and South America are addressed separately in the following three chapters, whilst the final chapter (Chapter 9) presents a general overview of future climate scenarios for all the southern continents together. The text is adequately illustrated throughout, w t drawings and TI - Climates of the southern continents: Present, past and future.
