A O.1-ml suspension of bacteria (lO-l00 cfu) was deposited on a corner of trypticase soy agar plates (NaCl concentra­ tion, 0-3.0%), spread evenly with a loop, and incubated at 37 C. The colonies were examined and counted at 24 and 48 hr. The first deleterious effect of NaCl was retarded growth, which, after 24 hr, resulted in smaller colonies than those of the bacteria grown on trypticase soy agar with no NaCl.
