TY - JOUR AU - Kataoka,, Hironao AB - Abstract A xanthophycean coenocytic alga Vaucheria geminata exhibited typical tip-growth. The growth pattern was closely related to the external L-D regime. Under a 12 L-12 D regime, the alga started to grow at the beginning of the dark period and ceased to grow at the end of the light period; while under a 24 L-0 D, it grew at a constant rate ranging from 100 to 200 μm/hr. The algaa lso exhibited positive phototropism. Using the half-side-illumination method the bending process was analyzed. The process followed Weber-Fechner's law and Bunsen-Roscoe's law. The action spectrum for the phototropism was determined, and results indicated that only blue light was effective. The hyaline cap, which was found only at the growing tip, shifted to the illuminated side of the tip prior to bending.
