AB - Dissertation Abstracts 61 2. An analysis of the relationship between Alltug and party-based cultural milieux. 3. An in-depth investigation of the music, theatre, and festivals created by the parties’ cultural wings for their following. My study of Alltug in the first section concentrates on those aspects thereof which were key to the parties’ definitions of the proletariat and which in turn were instrumental in determining cultural policy. These aspects are: the city itself, housing, work, family life, leisure, and youth. This section is not limited to an ‘objective’ description and analysis. Rather, by using SPD and KPD sources, I make explicit the different pictures these parties painted of Berlin’s working class. I analyse the social milieux of the parties, political and cultural leadership and the rank and file membership of the cultural organizations. I look at their professions and neighbourhoods in order to determine which class fraction they inhabit. Comparisons are made not only between but also within the parties. Then I investigate several Vorfldorganisationen, showing what they were, their accomplishments, and their relationship to the parties. This points up the problem of organizational patriotism which plagued both parties. Finally, the bulk of my dissertation is directed towards music,
