TY - JOUR AU - Jortani, Saeed, A AB - Collaborative research in various fields of medicine has led to the creation of new disciplines such as pharmacogenomics and toxicogenomics. Many of the individuals involved in these fields, as well as the authors, coauthors, and editors of this book, are from pharmaceutical and governmental organizations. Clinical laboratorians have also become more interested in understanding and using the avalanche of new information generated in the form of discovery of new biomarkers for prognosis, diagnosis, management, and treatment of various diseases generated by such “omics” approaches. In particular, assessing the toxicity or pharmacologic activity of therapeutics in clinical practice, with special emphasis on individual variability, has been the focal point of pharmacogenomics. This book is a timely and thorough compendium covering various subjects in toxicology, genetics, expression profiling, and bioinformatics. It also contains several specialty chapters related to toxicogenomics, such as statistics, use of genetically altered mice, and mechanisms of toxicity predictions. The chapters on proteomics and metabolomics provide a succinct overview of these newly emerging fields as well. The last chapter is a short, but valuable, listing of toxiconomics resources with brief descriptions. This textbook will be of value for new students in pathology, toxicology, pharmacology, laboratory medicine, and bioinformatics. Seasoned researchers in any of those fields who are interested in learning more about the “omics revolution” will also find it of use because it provides a valuable collection of new approaches to biomarker discovery.
