To examinequalitativeand quantitativedifferencesin cognitivefunctioningin cortical and subcorticaldementia,14 community-dwelling residentswith probableAlzheimer’sdementia (PDAT), 21 community-dwelling patients with Parkinson’sdisease (PD), and 24 normal controls(NC) were givenneuropsychological assessment.The mean age for the three groups was: PDAT= 79.1 years,range 70-86 years;PD = 74.4 years,range 70-79 years;NC = 74.4 years, range 70-81 years. Cognitivefunctionswere assessedby tests of orientation,verbal and nonverbalmemory, abstract reasoning,language, visuoperceptual,and constructional ability.Controllingfor the effectsof age, significantgroupdifferences(p < .05) were found on 17 of the 22 dependentmeasures.The PDATgroup was significantlyinferiorto the NC group on all 17 variablesand to the PD group on 10 variables.Despitea lack of significant differencesbetween the PD and NC
