KOSHELENKO (Moscow) The aim of the present article is to try to understand certain changes of set- tlement patterns in the oasis of Merv in antiquity and in the mediaeval period and then to find out which of those changes were caused by the natural devel- opment of the environment and which could be ascribed to human activities. The principal results of our investigations as well as the published results of the investigations undertaken by our colleagues (the Russian expedition directed by V.I. Sarianidi and the Italian expedition directed by M. Tozi) are illustrated by seven maps demonstrating the location and size of the territories of the oasis de- veloped by man at different stages of its history, the sites most prominent during certain periods and, more or less accurately, the main natural water courses and the principal components of the artificial irrigation-system. It should be mentioned that in our investigations we used the map "Holocene paleoenvironmental evolution and ancient settlement patterns in the Merv oasis" prepared by B. Marcolongo (The Institute of Geology, Padua), which we found most TI - The Oasis of Merv: the Dynamics of Its Settling and Irrigation JF - Ancient Civilizations from Scythia to Siberia DO - 10.1163/157005796X00046 DA - 1997-01-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/brill/the-oasis-of-merv-the-dynamics-of-its-settling-and-irrigation-nMgtvLSOMb SP - 49 EP - 60 VL - 3 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
