TY - JOUR AU - Iqbal, M. A. AB - Prestressing steel wire is widely used in construction projects, such as prestressed concrete structures, railway sleepers, long-span cable bridges, and critical installations like nuclear power plants. Comprehending the performance of prestressed concrete structures in extreme conditions like blasts and impacts is crucial. In these scenarios, both the concrete and prestressing wire experience high-strain-rate loading. While there has been substantial research on the dynamic behavior of concrete, the response of prestressing wire to high-rate loading conditions has not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, it has become essential to investigate the dynamic behavior of prestressing steel wire at high strain rates. This research evaluates the dynamic behavior of prestressing steel wire at high strain rates, ranging from 250 to 2375 s−1. The experiments are conducted using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) setup. To cover this broad range of strain rates, both configurations of SHPB are employed for dynamic compression and indirect tension tests. The strain rate sensitivity of the prestressing steel wire is carefully analyzed. The constitutive strength models of Johnson–Cook and Cowper Symonds are calibrated to represent the stress–strain relationship accurately across this wide range of strain rates. Additionally, the fracture model of Johnson–Cook is investigated, considering the effects of stress triaxiality and high strain rate, to understand the fracture behavior of prestressing steel wire. Further, the original Johnson–Cook model has been modified to predict the actual response of prestressing steel wire at a high strain rate. These models accurately characterize the actual response of prestressing steel wire under dynamic loadings, providing valuable insights for investigating structural behavior under extreme events such as blasts and impacts through numerical simulations.
