TY - JOUR AU - Davis, A F AB - An apparatus is described for determining total hemispherical emissivities at temperatures above 500 c. The method applies to all metals from which tubes can be fabricated. The tube is heated by passing an electric current through it, and the emissivity is calculated from the power dissipated at equilibrium by the central portion of the tube. Convection and conduction through the gas surrounding the tube are eliminated by enclosing the tube in an evacuated chamber, and conduction losses along the tube itself are calculated from the temperature distribution along the tube.
