TY - JOUR AU - Domínguez Lázaro, A. R. AB - Prolene® suture is a monofilament, synthetic, non‐absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of an isotactic crystalline stereoisomer of polypropylene, a synthetic linear polyofelin. Prolene® sutures are for use in general soft tissue approximation or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic and neurosurgical procedures. Allergic reactions to this material are rare ( 1 ). Case Report A 68‐year‐old woman, with no history of atopy or allergy, first presented 20 years ago, 7 days after abdominal surgery, with pain in the suture area and spontaneous rupture of the scar. We have no further details of this episode. The patient now needed a corneal transplant. For such surgery, ophthalmologists use various types of sutures, which patients retain for 7–12 months. She was referred to our outpatient clinic to investigate the possibility of an allergic reaction to sutures. The sutures used in our hospital for corneal transplantation are Ethilon® (polyamide 6 monofilament) (Johnson & Johnson Intl., Brussels, Belgium) or Prolene® (polypropylene monofilament) (Johnson & Johnson Intl.). The patient was patch tested with Ethilon® as is and colourless Prolene® as is, with readings taken at 2 and 4 days. The patch test with Prolene® was positive (++), while that with Ethilon® was negative.
