TY - JOUR AU - Rössner, Stephan AB - Sancho I, who died in 966, had a nickname, Sancho the Fat. He succeeded his half‐brother, Ordoño III, in 956 and then reigned in León in north Spain until his death, except with 2 years interruption from 958 to 960, when the throne was taken over by Ordoño the Wicked. Sancho had problems when inheriting the throne and it was not given that he should be installed as the new king. However, when Ordoño died, Sancho simply took the vacant throne. Two years later, he was deposed by the nobility led by Fernán Gonzáles of Castile because of Sancho's extreme obesity. Only 2 years later, he would however be back. Sancho went in exile in Andalusia and managed to lose at least part of his weight under treatment of Hasdai ibn Shaprut. When recovering health, he started to make attempts to reclaim his throne and went to his grandmother Torda in Pamplona and asked for help. As a by‐product of his exile period, he concluded a treaty with the Moors in Spain, and with help of the nobility from Leon and Navarra, managed to conquer the city of Zamora in 959 and got his throne back.
