One of the challenges for a (Neo)platonist is showing how the changing and unre- liable world of sense perception can be an object of scientifi c knowledge. Th is dissertation is a study of the solution presented by the Neoplatonist Proclus (Ath- ens, 411-485) in his Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus . Th e analysis focuses on the subject of philosophy of nature (or physiologia ), its methods and sub-disciplines, and the nature of its discourse. After the introductory chapter, Chapter II presents an analysis of Proclus’ con- cept of nature, the subject of physiologia . It is argued that Proclus, as opposed to Plotinus, takes nature not to be a part of soul. Instead, nature is primarily a semi- hypostasis next to soul, and functions as an immanent tool for the transcendent Demiurge. Th is immanent nature, however, is part of an ontological stratifi cation of diff erent natures and their transcendent causes. As a consequence, physiologia too
