TY - JOUR AU - Sakita, Masami AB - AbstractThis paper describes the overall design of a cat-and-mouse type rotary engine, and its performance evaluation. The rotary engine is equipped with a toroidal or quasi-toroidal working chamber, in which two sets of piston assemblies rotate around the piston shaft at different speeds. While one piston assembly decelerates, the other accelerates. These actions allow the piston assembly pair to increase or decrease the subchamber volumes. As part of this work, two computer models were developed, one for the proposed rotary engine and the other for a conventional reciprocating engine, and the performance of the rotary engine was compared against that of the reciprocating engine. The analysis results using the computer models indicate that the proposed rotary engine should be able to generate substantially higher bmep than the engines available in the market if the proposed engine is able to operate as intended.
