TY - JOUR AB - M.T. Chin, Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington The incidence of heart failure in the elderly population continues to increase and now affects one in 100 individuals over the age of 65. Exposure to air pollution is associated with exacerbation of heart failure but the causal mechanisms are poorly understood. Studies in rodents indicate that in utero exposure alone is sufficient to predispose to adult heart failure, suggesting that susceptibility to this aging-related disorder can be determined before birth. Potential mechanisms and applicability to human exposures will be discussed. © The Author 2015. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of The Gerontological Society of America.
