AB -  On July 31st 1993 Heinz Holter, 89 years old, passed away and a long, eventful life ended for the well-known cell physiologist. Heinz Holter came to Denmark in 1930, on a short visit to the Carlsberg Laboratory, to which his name was to become closely linked, and where his development from organic chemist to cell physiologist was to become enhanced and to bloom in interaction with Kaj Linderstrcam-Lang. This visit was supposed to have lasted only a year, but was prolonged to a lifetime for the young Austrian who became a Danish citizen in 1939. He was a highly esteemed member of the Danish scientific community and, although he grew up in the Austrian Alps, he fell in lovc with the rolling Danish countryside and surrounding seas. Who was the young Austrian who at 26 years old became spellbound by Danish science and adopted Denmark as his new country? Heinz Alois Albert Friedrich Holter was born on June 5th 1904 in Leonding near Linz in Upper Austria. His multitalented father was a physician whose family resided in Wels where for generations they had traded in iron, the Eisen-Holters. His mother also came from Upper Austria. Heinz Holter grew
