AB - Castello d’uovo, 1605‐1615: an upgradeTranslators’ PrefaceIn summer 2003, The Philosophical Forum published a double issue devoted to philosophical poetry. The issue was quite an effort, involving poems in twelve languages and six alphabets. Among these philosophical poets, we published translations of six Italian poems by the Renaissance philosopher Tomasso Campanella, perhaps the first English translations since Symonds’ selection in the 19th century. I did two of the Campanella translations myself, and after 2003 I continued to work on Campanella. Joined in 2004 by Professor Laura Teresa di Summa, with Firpo’s fat little Italian edition always at our elbow, we labored away on Campanella during our spare moments for six years, until we had translated all 200 or so of Campanella’s philosophical poems. (They number 1 to 89, but some numbers contain many parts.) Just as we were finishing this task, the University of Chicago press published Sherry Roush’s “Selected Philosophical Poems of Tomasso Campanella” in an excellently rendered and annotated bi‐lingual edition, containing about half of the poems. This was soon followed by the second half of the poems in a second volume published by Fabrizio Serra in Pisa.Our natural disappointment caused by the appearance of the Roush volumes
