Tikalovich UDC 669.14:678.054 The quality of tabletting machine press tools and, consequently, the accurate weight of tablets and their appearance, depend, to a considerable extent, on a correct selection of steels for these tools and their heat treatment. Table 1 gives the analyses of steels used by foreign press tool manufacturers. Many firms develop special steels to meet the specific requirements of powders being tabletted whose physical properties vary over a wide range. Kilian use 215M-2542-45 WCrV7 steel which corresponds to the Russian 4KhV2S steel. The difference between the compositions of the Soviet and the foreign steel is insignificant. The 215M-2542-45 WCrV7 steel contains 0.2% of vandium which improves its mechanical properties and reduces the grain size but has a slightly deteriorating effect on its hardenability. However, an increased silicon content balances the effect of the vanadium and thereby improves the hardenability. The 4KhV2S steel contains no vanadium but has up to 0.35% of nickel which fully compensates for the lack of vanadium since it reduces the grain size, increases the hardening depth, and improves the fatigue strength of hardened parts.
