These same two themes are picked out in the next essay on ‘Gesetz und weisheit im Pentateuch’ and contrasts law backed by sanctions (which is in princi- ple of universal application) and insight that is given to or achieved by few. in sirach the identification of the law (Torah) with wisdom brings the two concepts closer together and implies a more ‘liberal’ understanding of law. An essay on the ethics of the Decalogue begins with the last of the commandments, those dealing with the inner disposition of humans, before moving ‘upwards’ to those dealing with human solidarity and mutual responsibility, and then to religious obligations. The Deca- logue must be approached from several standpoints, not one.
