TY - JOUR AU - TAKAGI,, Atsushi AB - Abstract In the phagocytosis of the macrophages (MP), the microorganisms were wrapped with the extended folds of the cell cortex. The extended folds, flattened pseudopodla and ridge-like processes showed a uniform thickness of about 100 nm. Therefore, it is supposed that there is a functional unit having this thickness in the cell cortex of MP. Under the treatment with cytochalasin B or pH 5.1 condition, MP showed a certain extent of contraction of pseudopodia, the marked diminution of the ridge-like processes on the dorsal surface, and a distinct decrease in phagocytic activity. At the treatment with colchicine or pH 8.0 condition, MP showed a marked contraction of cell bodies; and the distribution of the ridge-like processes on their dorsal surface became dense and their heights increased. The phagocytic activity was not so much affected under these treatments. Many peculiar granular substances were recognized in the perimeter of thin pseudopodia, though their significance was not yet elucidated.
