According to Marshall McLuhan, the TV screen is an extension of our senses of sight, hearing, and sometimes smell, becoming a part of each viewer's whole psychological environment. To the young parent, TV is a built-in baby-sitter. To some, it is tomorrow's newspaper in capsule form or the siren song of deodorant dilemmas, of beers and bras, promoting prosperity. To others, television is the corner movie theatre transplanted to the living room, depicting the ancient history of Hollywood. To the college administrator, television may be part of the answer to rising enrollments and teacher shortages. To the faculty member, television may be regarded as a threat or a blessing, depending upon many factors. Unlike the motion picture and radio broadcasting, television has had wide publicity and substantial financial support in the past 15 yr. to study its potentials for the improvement of instruction. This paper will be limited to discussion of the effectiveness of instructional television (ITV) rather than general educational broadcasting, with special emphasis on college teaching at the undergraduate level. Interest in television as a teaching tool lies primarily in its versatility in comparsion to other available instructional media. Television can combine motion-picture film, slides, recordings, many types of graphics, plus the live teacher for instantaneous transmission to the classroom TV set without processing delay. In addition, with the video-tape recorder, the television presentation may be stored to use when needed, and revised readily by use of the new electronic editors.
