TY - JOUR AU - Sigurdson, Lorenz W AB - An apparatus is described that facilitates the firstdetailed photographic study of the vortex ring structure createdby a bursting bubble resting on a pool of liquid. The discoveryof a novel method of bubble positioning was essential tosuccess. A shallow liquid pool is formed by the convex meniscuson the flat top of a vertically oriented cylinder, on which asingle bubble will centre itself. An aerosol is used toinflate the bubble and act as a flow-visualization medium. Aspark ruptures the bubble and triggers the photographic process, generating a time-delayed sequence of photographs to study theretraction of the bubble film and the evolution and speed of theresulting vortex ring structure. The in situ surface tension ofthe centred bubble film can be calculated using Laplace'sequation and the measured bubble pressure.
