TY - JOUR AU - Pearce, Joanne AB - and Among the many factors controlling male reproductive behavior in polygamous spe- cies, one of the most fascinating is that as- sociated with the animal's social environ- ment. For example, in the giant Malyasian prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) a complex social organization exists in the male reproductive strategy, in which three forms of sexually mature males occur within a single population (Ra'anan and Cohen, 1985; Ra'anan and Sagi, 1985). At the top of the hierarchy is the dominant and terri- torial blue claw (BC) male which is usually sexually active in association with several females. This is followed by two other forms of subdominant and nonterritorial males, namely, an orange claw (OC) male which has poor mating success and a clear claw or small male (SM) which practices a form of sneak mating because of its small size and high mobility. Loss of the dominant BC male prawn permits one of the OC males to assume dominance following a meta- morphic molt (Kuris et al., 1987). There is also a hierarchy regarding claw size among the three male morphs going in descending order from BC < OC < SM. These claws are used during courtship and mating TI - SIMILARITY IN CLAW MUSCLES AMONG THE THREE MALE MORPHS OF THE FRESH-WATER PRAWN MACROBRACHIUM ROSENBERGII JF - Journal of Crustacean Biology DO - 10.1163/193724093X00516 DA - 1993-01-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/brill/similarity-in-claw-muscles-among-the-three-male-morphs-of-the-fresh-ixAP41yGYx SP - 138 EP - 141 VL - 13 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
