Wireless systems and location mechanisms are two of the most developing and promising sectors of the current world of technology. The idea of embedding the location mechanisms into wireless systems, in order to expand their capabilities and services offered, is very in- triguing, yet demands hard work on planning and implementation. Even before the launch of packet switched services in wireless and cellular systems, a large number of network operators and manufactures were working on the development of Location Based Technolo- gies and Services. Location is a strategic asset of cellular and wireless carriers. Leveraging this information enables the user to experience value-added services and the mobile network operator to offer differentiation and incremental profitability. Moreover, exploiting location information to improve network planning and performance is very promising issue for the near future. We are witnessing the start of an era where the impact of location technolo- gies and services will be tremendous, especially as 3G and beyond networks become oper- ational. Location Based Services (LBS) will be a critical element in helping operators shift their revenue base away from commoditized voice toward information applications TI - Editorial Note JF - Wireless Personal Communications DO - 10.1023/B:WIRE.0000049405.42963.35 DA - 2004-12-20 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/springer-journals/editorial-note-ix0mGylHtt SP - 75 EP - 76 VL - 30 IS - 4 DP - DeepDyve ER -
