TY - JOUR AU - Walters, Martha, I AB - Abstract The effect of using completely frozen (decolorized) or partially frozen (faded) Drabkin’s reagents in measuring cyanmethemoglobin concentrations were evaluated. Since pigment produced by the decolorized reagent is oxyhemoglobin, falsely high values were obtained. However, pigment produced by the faded reagent is cyanmethemoglobin and no errors were introduced. The error introduced by using decolorized reagent for cyanmethemoglobin determinations depended upon the resolution of the instruments used for measuring absorbances. A simple procedure is described for measuring heme concentrations as reduced hemoglobin, and was applied to confirm cyanmethemoglobin values obtained in the various reagents.
