TY - JOUR AB - Function. To re‐train flexion in a stiff knee and improve the vascular and lymphatic circulation in the lower limbs.Indications for use(1)Osteo‐arthritis of knee joint with poor flexion.(2)Poor circulation in lower limbs.(3)Recovering hamstring muscles following poliomyelitis.(4)Following prolonged recumbency during illness.(5)Prior to bone‐grafting with mobilization of all joints.(6)Ten to fourteen days following a Meniscectomy.Technique(1)The patient lies prone with a pillow under the knees.(2)The thighs are fixed by a strap which encircles the couch.(3)Allow the normal leg to relax in the harness.(4)The knee flexors of the stiff knee now work strongly concentrically to bend the knee as far as possible. When this limit is reached the knee flexors still work in a static manner.(5)The extensors of the good knee now work strongly concentrically and this tension is conveyed to the flexors of the stiff knee through the cord and pulley circuit, thus increasing the tension already being exerted by the flexors. This increases the range of movement under control.Contra‐indications(1)Any condition of the knee joint where complete ankylosis has taken place or been brought about by operation.(2)Any acute condition of the knee joint where infection is present, e.g. tuberculosis.(3)In complete paralysis of the quadriceps.(4)Bone conditions where spontaneous fracture might occur, e.g. Fragilitas Ossium; TI - THE AUTO‐ASSISTED ACTIVE FLEXION TENSION APPARATUS JF - International Journal of Clinical Practice DO - 10.1111/j.1742-1241.1956.tb00494.x DA - 1956-03-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/wiley/the-auto-assisted-active-flexion-tension-apparatus-hdrOi62eNW SP - 170 EP - 170 VL - 10 IS - 3 DP - DeepDyve ER -
