TY - JOUR AU1 - Long, Peter I. AB - The purpose of this study was to determine the factors involved in an occupational affliction of kitchen workers, namely a soreness of fingers with extravasion of blood under the finger nail. Forty volunteer subjects scrubbed pans under standard conditions with a variety of detergents, and comparisons were made between one hand which was bare and the other hand which was gloved, a small amount of the detergent solution being placed in each glove. A typical subungual hemorrhage with soreness was produced in the gloved hand of one subject. At its height the lesion resembled a traumatic hematoma. Eczematoid dermatitis occurred in six subjects but involved both gloved and ungloved hands in every case. No differences were found among the detergents used. Gloves should be worn for prolonged, repeated pan washing, and the washing solution should not be allowed to accumulate inside the gloves.
