As the US population of speakers of other languages continues to increase, and the question of bilingual education looms over California, this book details the need for bilingual education in the United States and shows how researchers, educators, and policy makers can influence the debate. In their introductory chapter, the editors contextualize what it means to be bilingual in the United States. Drawing on mostly quantitative and but also some qualitative studies, they postulate that bilingualism in the twenty-first century is advantageous in an era of globalization.
