This monograph — the first in an important new series of supplements to the journal Aethiopica — presents a first report on a survey of the churches and mon- asteries of north-eastern Tǝgray in North ethiopia, undertaken in the years 2010– 12, the aim of which was to provide a more comprehensive picture of the Christian ethiopian written heritage and manuscript culture. As such, the primary focus was on the manuscript collections. The importance of the region lies in the fact that it is the area of the ancient Aksumite kingdom and thus the area in which Christianity began in ethiopia in the fourth century. it is also the case that the manuscript col- lections of the north-eastern part of Tǝgray are less well known than those of other areas in North ethiopia. The aim of the project was to treat each collection as an entity and to see what can be said about its origins,
