The previously responsible editor, Horst Baier, who had written his dissertation on Max Weber’s philosophy of science, had unfortunately failed to publish these difficult writings and has since died. With the Frankfurt sociologist Gerhard Wagner now someone has been entrusted with the edition who—coming from the Max Weber Institute in Heidelberg—had already intensively worked on Weber’s philosophy of science and has a fundamental interest in questions of methodology (see Wagner and Zip‑ prian 1994; Wagner 2012). And finally, a first part of the writings, the book reviewed here, has been published in the Max Weber Complete Edition of the Mohr Siebeck Verlag, com‑ missioned by the Bavarian Academy of
