Historians are paying growing consideration to the practical dimensions of alchemy, as well as to the transfer of materials and ideas among natural philosophers, artisans, and artists. Lab- oratories of Art is a recent contribution to this burgeoning research field, and an example of the many interesting studies emerging from it. Published to coincide with the exhibition Art and Alchemy. The Mystery of Transformation, curated by Dedo von Kerssenbrock-Krosigk, Lawrence Principe and Sven Dupré, and in view at the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf in 2014, the volume is made up of eight essays preceded by an introduction by the editor. In this, Dupré contextualises this editorial project by briefly outlining the historical relationships between laboratories and workshops, and highlighting the originality of this volume in that it is “not concerned with travelling materials and shared material culture [but with] epistemic exchanges between producers of the arts of fire and alchemists” (p. ix).
