TY - JOUR AU - Baruch, John AB - NEWS Supernova dust factory revealed ALMA This three-dimensional map of the remnant of supernova 1987A is the first to show the distribution of two key molecules in the central region. Emis- sion from carbon monoxide is shown in yellow, while purple indicates silicon monoxide; both were found in discrete clumps and in greater abundances than supernova models had suggested – 100 times more SiO than anticipated. These molecules are bright at the submillimetre wavelengths used by the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array; Hubble Space Telescope data on hydrogen was used to reconstruct the outer ring, ren- dered into 3D. These data are published by Indebetouw et al. in the Astrophysical Journal. The team also looked for new molecules in SN1987A, and found HCO+ and SO (sulphur monoxide), data to be reported in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. http://bit.ly/2t6zqMZ Society.
