TY - JOUR AB - KLEINBAUM , D. G. and KLEIN , M. Survival Analysis: A Self‐Learning Text , 2nd edition . Springer‐Verlag , New York , 2005 . xv + 590 pp. US$84.95 (hardcover), ISBN 0‐387‐23918‐9 . The first edition was recommended in Biometrics , 59.2, p. 1528, as a self‐study text for public health workers. Like the first edition, the second edition needs as a recommended prerequisite at least a course on quantitative methods in epidemiology and in applied multiple regression. The second edition has been expanded by three chapters: Chapter 7 is devoted to parametric models in survival analysis that among other things gives an introduction to frailty models. Chapter 8 deals with so‐called recurrent events and discusses the application of Cox proportional hazard models where a stratified version is presented that stratifies on the order in which recurrent events occur. Three models are considered in Chapter 9 for modeling competing risks, which means that for each subject only one of several types of events can occur during follow‐up. The models considered are a Cox model, a parametric survival model, and a model based on the cumulative incidence. The remaining chapters of the first edition have been carefully revised as TI - Survival Analysis: A Self‐Learning Text by D.G. Kleinbaum and M.
