Introduction The switching surge discharge is one of the fundamental characteristics of a lightning arrester. The test method is specified in JEC-203, wherein the discharge duty of the discharge of maximum energy, and the reclosing and restriking surge of a no-load transmission line i s given. However, it is a complicated phenomenon depending on the source capacity, line length, line surge impedance, a r r e s t e r location, etc. A l though the serial g a p lightning a r r e s t e r with SIC as the characteristic element has a long history of service and many studies on its switching surge characteristics have been published [3-61, the recent trend i s pointing more toward a gapless a r r e s t e r with ZnO nonlinear resistors [l, 21. This paper discusses the basic characteristics of the switching surge of a ZnO a r r e s t e r .
