TY - JOUR AU - Ryu, Dae Young AB - To Build a New Korea: The Political Campaign of Two Protestant Newspapers in Late Joseon Korea Dae Young Ryu Introduction Various groups and individuals with different intentions and aspira- tions were involved in the Korean modernization or civilization- enlightenment movement, as it has come to be called, in late Joseon Korea. Protestant missionaries were peculiar among these in that they considered it a part of their religious calling to disseminate Western civilization and indeed devoted themselves to that task. Their primary purpose for coming to and living in Korea was to win converts and spread Christianity. Yet these same Western missionar- ies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were also believers in the supremacy of Western civilization. For them Chris- tianity and Western civilization were inseparable and irrevocably intertwined. Therefore, most American Protestant missionaries of that time considered it their duty to diffuse Western civilization as Naturally, they also became some of part of their mission efforts.
