H o l s t i In view of the generally unsatisfactory results of treatment of many malignant tumors and in the absence of any new strong weapon against cancer, more and more emphasis has been put on measures leading to early detection of malignant disease. The best results in this respect have hitherto probably been attained in the gynecological field, but dramatic differences in even long-term survival have been reported fairly recently from early recognition and treatment of tumors in other organs also |8]. On the other hand, a considerable number of investigators believe that the prognosis depends more on the original biologic nature of the tumor than on its early recognition [13, 17].
