TY - JOUR AU - Mitscherling, Jeff AB - British Journal of Aesthetics, Vol. 28, No. 1, Winter ig88 THE AESTHETIC EXPERIENCE AND THE 'TRUTH' OF ART Jeff Mitscherling IN A recent paper entitled 'Problems With Literary Truths',1 Peter McCormick contrasts 'two quite different contemporary accounts of literary truths, an analytic and a hermeneutic one'.2 He characterizes one difference between the two accounts as follows: 'Hermeneutic philosophers are less concerned to analyze the truth conditions of different kinds of sentence whether literary or non-literary than they are intrigued by the possibility that artworks may provide access to truths that are otherwise unavailable elsewhere.'3 As McCor- mick explains further, with regard now to the literary work of art in particular, the hermeneutic philosopher locates 'these truths neither in the sentences in the work nor in those about the work. Rather these truths are to be identified within the understanding of the texts.'4 In the penultimate section of his paper—enti- tled 'Invitations To Further Inquiry'—McCormick points out that there remains much work to be done by way of clarifying the respective natures both of the truths of art works and of the 'event of understanding'5 within which alone these truths are said to become accessible.
