Band. 1900.]STOBART71Collection.GRIFFITH.Hierzu Tafel 1—ΠΙ.T h e r e is a very rare class of pagan texts in which the native Egyptian languageis written out with full vocalization by the aid of Greek letters.Owing to the wide use of Greek as the official language of Egypt during theGraeco-Roman period, and to the presence of a considerable foreign population forwhom the native language and writing were unfamiliar, as early as the 2ndcentury resort was occasionally made to the Greek alphabet for the spelling ofEgyptian words, and even of whole texts. For the natives, too, this methodhad its advantage: the vocalization of their words could thereby be expressed.So far as we know, all the native writing of Christian Egypt was on this plan,and we have also a few examples of its employment even while paganism wasstill supreme.
