AB - Twistar™ is Akzo Nobel's LCP retarder which can provide full compensation of the birefringence effects of STN liquid crystalline displays, by using only a single, thin, polymer layer. The birefringence of Twistar™ decreases with increasing temperature giving this retarder the unique ability to provide full compensation of the display over a broad range of temperatures. The use of Twistar™ can considerably increase the maximum temperature at which a film‐compensated display can be used. Even for temperature‐critical applications in which currently only double cell STN (DSTN) displays can be used, Twistar™ can replace the compensation cell while maintaining the broad working temperature range. In this paper the Twistar™‐retarder will be described in detail. Experimental data of the temperature‐matched compensation of this retarder are given.
