Biological Field Techniques for Chionoecetes Crabs.—University of Alaska Sea Grant College Program, Fairbanks, Alaska. SG–99–02. Pp. 1–80. $40.00. As announced in the title, this booklet is a manual intending to help those gathering biological information and samples of Chionoecetes species during field work. The basic scope is to standardise data collection and to harmonise the various approaches in use. The guide is mainly concerned with North Pacific populations, but people working in the Atlantic will find very useful information. For a wider audience, however, we can regret that works and approaches developed in the East Coast of Canada are generally ignored. For instance, the brief review of the life history (Chapter 2) is based on a quite old literature (no reference younger than 1989) and mainly refers to the Tanner crab ( C. bairdi ), without taking into consideration the more recent works carried on C. opilio . However, the reader should not expect to find here a solid review of existing literature, that not being the authors' intent. The first chapter reviews the taxonomy and gives precise indications on how to determine Chionoecetes species, including hybrids, which TI - Book Review JF - Journal of Crustacean Biology DO - 10.1163/20021975-99990129 DA - 2001-01-01 UR - https://www.deepdyve.com/lp/brill/book-review-eFIvPDcemK SP - 315 EP - 315 VL - 21 IS - 1 DP - DeepDyve ER -
